After winning the 2019 Varsity Cup with the University of Stellenbosch Maties, Chris Smit joined the Griquas but signed a two-year deal with the Toyota Cheetahs in November that year.  

The centre, who can also play at flyhalf, is cool-headed on the field and has a good distribution game which has caught the attention of many coaches in South Africa. The player who will be turning 25-years-old in August was named the 2019 Varsity Cup Player of the Tournament.

Chris made his debut for the Toyota Cheetahs against the Ospreys in Swansea on 30 November 2019.
