Siyabonga Praisegod Masuku, known to his teammates as Siya, has made a name for himself in Cheetah country as a cool-headed and accurate flyhalf with an eye for goal-kicking.
Although Masuku is par excellence a flyhalf, he initially played inside centre for the Toyota Cheetahs in eight matches in the 2021 Currie Cup competition. He had his first Currie Cup game for the Toyota Cheetahs against the Pumas in the Toyota Stadium, Bloemfontein, on 9th July 2021.
Hawies Fourie, the Toyota Cheetah coach, used Siya in the number 10 jersey in three Toyota Challenge matches towards the end of the 2021 season. In these matches, Masuku showed that he could swing the course of a game with his accurate goal-kicking by scoring 46 points in these three matches. He scored 20 points (four conversions and four penalties) against the Sharks in Bloemfontein on 20th November 2021.
Siya played flyhalf in nine of his ten Currie Cup matches in 2022. With Ruan Pienaar, the Cheetah captain and scrum-half, who established himself as the Free Staters' top goal-kicker in the last few seasons, Masuku was therefore not used in this role in these matches.
In 2014, Masuku participated for the Pumas in the annual Craven Week for Under 18 teams in Middelburg in Mpumalanga. After school at Piet Retief High School in Mpumalanga, he played for four provinces - Lions (2015-'18) in Johannesburg, Leopards (2018-'19) in Potchefstroom, the Southern Kings (2019-'20) in Port Elizabeth, before settling in Bloemfontein towards the middle of 2021.
